He is a contemporary Chinese artist and activist. His influential, sometimes controversial and always thought-provoking artworks include photography, videos, sculptural installations, and architectural projects. He has combined Chinese tradition with contemporary practice and often uses his art to critique political and economic injustice. He continues to be an active supporter of human rights and strongly believes that "there is a responsibility for any artist to protect freedom of expression".
