John Constable

Have you heard of John Constable?

Probably you have as he is one of the most well renowned British landscape artists. It is worthwhile to revisit his works particularly his later, maybe less well known, watercolour paintings. In fact, after 1829 he preferred working in this medium as opposed to oils and is regarded as a master of watercolour. His painting 'Stonehenge' is considered one of the greatest watercolour paintings. He used colour more widely than was customary at the time reflecting the shades found in nature, often using opaque pigments and thicker brushes demonstrating his skill in capturing light and creating moody atmospheric skies and landscapes. He based his art on studies from nature and his works remind us of our connection to the natural world.
